The Best Kids Sleeping Bags of 2024

Here are 10 of the best kids’ sleeping bags we’ve found using our parental experience, online reviews, and our knowledge of spending time in the great outdoors.

Core Youth Indoor/Outdoor Sleeping Bag

Best Kids' Sleeping Bag for Warm Weather

This lightweight, brightly-colored kids’ sleeping bag from Core is a good thickness for summer camping.

Designed to accommodate children up to 5 feet tall, the bag can be unzipped at the bottom to provide some extra cool airflow on those warm summer nights.

What’s cool about this bag is that it can be zipped together with another one of these bags to create a larger sleeping space. That’s great if you have children who like to stretch out more and don’t want to feel confined while sleeping. It’s also a good solution if you have two children camping together and might feel more secure with their sibling in the sleeping bag with them.

Pros

  • Unzips completely so it can be used as a comforter.
  • It dries quickly when damp.
  • It comes with a matching stuff sack for easy transport and storage.

Cons

  • Not warm enough on its own for colder nights.

User Experience

This sleeping bag caught my attention with its cool green color and lightweight design. I found it to be great for indoor use, but it may not provide enough warmth for outdoor adventures. The sleeping bag comes with a bag for storage, but it lacks straps to hold it in place. The bright color and cute camping-themed interior make it an attractive choice for kids, and it fits perfectly on a Disc-o-kids bunk bed cot. The zippers are sturdy and I haven't encountered any issues so far. Also, it provides ample room for growth, making it suitable for children of various ages.

Teton Sports Celsius Junior Kids’ Bag

Best Kids' Sleeping Bag for Camping

This one from Teton Sports is listed as a moderate weather bag suitable for outdoor, car, and backyard camping.

It has a curved hood to keep your pillow in place and your head off the floor.

It also has a lined zipper to prevent catching the liner — that will save you and your child a lot of frustration.

Pros

  • Added padding around the shoulders and zipper keep drafts out.
  • The brushed flannel liner is soft, warm, and wicks away moisture.
  • An internal pocket is the ideal hiding place for a flashlight and snacks.

Cons

  • The product is available in a left zip or right zip orientation. However, the left zip version is blue for boys, and the right zip version is lined pink for girls.
  • You can’t unzip it all the way if you want it to be flat and used as a comforter.

Personal Perspective

Got this sleeping bag and was pleasantly surprised by its dense, rugged quality. The temperature rating seems accurate, and it held up well during camping trips with my kids. However, I did struggle a bit when trying to fit the bag back into its storage sack, but with a bit of practice, I managed to stuff it in. The sizing may not be suitable for taller individuals, but it worked just fine for my younger children.

Coleman Kids’ Sleeping Bag

Best Kid's Sleeping Bag for Summer Camp

There is a reason why this Coleman sleeping bag is a popular pick for kids. They love that it glows in the dark.

It’s a good halfway point between “pretend” sleeping bags and the bags appropriate for heavy-duty campers.

This one works for camping, summer camps, sleepovers, and backyard campers.

Pros

  • The fun design is appealing to kids.
  • The “roll control” system makes it easier for kids to roll up their sleeping bag and get it into the accompanying stuff sack.
  • The Thermolock draft tube keeps the heat in, making your child feel warm and snug.

Cons

  • Some reviewers have said that this sleeping bag did not stand up to machine washing well.
  • The zipper can catch a bit around the corners.

Community Feedback

My experience with this Coleman sleeping bag for kids has been mostly positive, as it is perfect for cool weather camping and backyard campouts. The quality is impressive for the price, but there is one design flaw that I found frustrating. Instead of elastic bands to hold the bag in place while rolled up, it has ties, which are quite difficult to manage and often cause the bag to unroll. Additionally, the glow-in-the-dark feature was somewhat disappointing, as it only covers a small area. The material inside and out is the same smooth texture, making it a bit slippery.

Kelty Kids CloudLoft Mistral Synthetic Sleeping Bag

Best Kids' Sleeping Bag with Stuff Sack

The Kelty Mistral Synthetic sleeping bag for kids is a “mummy” design bag which is narrower at the bottom than at the top.

Some kids will like that, while others might want more legroom to kick around in.

The draft tube and zipper insulation keep out the cold air, and the hood design keeps your little ones from losing heat around their heads.

Pros

  • Cozy synthetic insulation retaining warmth.
  • Offset quilt construction and roomy footbox.
  • Includes stuff sack for easy transportation and storage.

Cons

  • Might not fit for kids taller than 5’6.

First-Hand Impression

I'm thrilled with this sleeping bag, as it has been perfect for my child's camping adventures. It kept them warm and comfortable in 55° weather, and the top even held their pillow in place overnight. The bag is lightweight, suitable for kids and adults up to around 5'6", and packs easily into the included small bag. The colors are beautiful, and it's a fantastic value for the price. However, I do wish the zipper were more durable, as it broke after only two days of use.

AceCamp Kids’ Sleeping Bags

Best Kids’ Sleeping Bag For Sleepovers

The unique wavy shape of the AceCamp keeps kids toasty warm while giving them room to wriggle in their sleep.

A front zipper makes it easier for little ones to zip and unzip their bag while the hood keeps heads warm.

It also stops kids from coming out of the top of their sleeping bag during the night.

Pros

  • Fun glow-in-the-dark constellations design.
  • The youth size fits campers up to 5 feet 4 inches tall, longer than most kids’ sleeping bags.
  • Elastic style hood means there are no potentially dangerous cords for children to become entangled in.

Cons

  • The child size is only good up to 4 feet 8 inches tall.

User Experience

After trying out this sleeping bag, I found that it has a decent texture despite not being made of cotton or flannel as advertised. My 11-year-old daughter, who is 55 inches tall, just fits in the 70-inch bag, which makes me concerned about its longevity as she grows. However, it did seem to keep her warm in cold weather, which is a plus. I noticed some odd white spots on the bag, which made me question its quality, but my other kids enjoyed it during our camping trip. The bag's glow-in-the-dark feature, strong zipper, and good insulation make it a popular choice among my children.

Big Agnes Little Red Sleeping Bag

Best Ultralight Kids’ Sleeping Bag

Not the most affordable of kids’ sleeping bags, but the Little Red from Big Agnes is the lightest. Thanks to how light it is, it’s a great choice for parents who want to have their kids carry their own gear.

The contoured hood keeps them warm and the integrated pad sleeve stops your child from sliding off of the sleeping pad.

If you are going to be all season camping, this durable kids’ sleeping bag might work well for you.

Pros

  • The sleeve on the back of the sleeping bag is designed to take a sleeping pad. This stops your child from sliding off of the mat in the night.
  • Loops at the end of the sleeping bag allow you to hang the bag up.
  • Packs down to 7.5 x 9 inches, so it’s easy to transport.

Cons

  • Only suitable for kids up to 4 feet 5 inches.
  • It doesn’t stay super warm so your child might complain a bit, especially in the colder months.

Personal Perspective

Love this sleeping bag for its high-quality construction and super cute design. The pad sleeve is a fantastic feature, keeping the bag attached to the pad for a cozy and secure sleep. However, the lack of insulation on the bottom requires a decent pad and possibly additional layers for colder temperatures.

Coleman Plum Fun 45 Youth Sleeping Bag

Best Budget Kids' Sleeping Bag

Coleman is known for its affordable camping equipment and their kids’ sleeping bags are no exception. The Plum Fun 45 is a budget-friendly option for a first sleeping bag or if you are looking for a sleeping bag that will be mostly used for sleepovers or summer sleepouts.

The glow-in-the-dark design is likely to be a big hit with kids, and it has an interior pocket where your child can store their flashlight.

Pros

  • Accommodates children up to 5 feet 5 inches tall.
  • Cute honey bee and honey pot design is appealing to kids.
  • It won’t break the bank but will also last for more than one outing.

Cons

  • Not the warmest of sleeping bags, so it’s only suitable for summer or indoor camping.
  • It’s hard to roll up and stuff it back in the bag.

In my experience, this sleeping bag is perfect for young children and offers a cozy, comfortable space for them to sleep. The glow-in-the-dark firefly design adds a touch of fun, while the small pocket for a flashlight is an ingenious addition. However, the use of strings to tie the bag instead of elastic straps feels outdated and can be challenging for kids to handle, but overall, the quality and warmth of the bag make it an excellent choice for cool weather camping.

Happy Nappers Pillow & Sleepy Sack

Best Sleeping Bag for Toddlers

Not all sleeping bags are for camping, and toddler sleeping bags are just as likely to be for naptime at daycare as they are for a night in the great outdoors.

Having had two little ones in daycare at once, I understand the importance of a warm, appealing, durable, and machine-washable toddlers’ sleeping bag. That’s why I recommend this sleeping bag from Happy Nappers.

The cute design is carried through into the stuff sack and the bag itself is comfortable on top of a sleeping mat.

Pros

  • Cute design is appealing to toddlers.
  • Comes with a matching stuff sack.
  • Can be machine washed.

Cons

  • Comes at a higher price point.
  • May not be best on cold weathers.

First-Hand Impression

Definitely a popular gift among children, this sleeping bag has provided warmth and comfort during nap time and sleepovers. However, I encountered an issue with missing buttons on the first one, and the sizing seems to be a bit off, as it may not fit children older than 7-8 years. I would recommend opting for the larger size if possible, as even my four-year-old found the medium a tight fit. While the product itself is adored by the little ones, the price point may deter some from purchasing it for casual use.

Tundra Wolf Kids’ Sleeping Bag

Best Kids’ Sleeping Bag With Glow-in-the-Dark Zipper

The unique design of the Tundra Wolf sleeping bag is only one of the reasons to choose this for your family camping adventures.

A glow-in-the-dark zipper makes it easier to open and close the sleeping bag in the dark. The bottom of the bag can be unzipped so kids can put on their footwear before getting out.

Pros

  • The stuff sack is designed for kids to push the bag into the sack, without having to roll the bag tight first.
  • The sack is also equipped with carrying straps which allow it to be used as a backpack.
  • Cleaning instructions are written for kids so there’s no excuse for them not to keep their sleeping bags clean themselves.

Cons

  • The glow-in-the-dark zipper doesn’t stay lit for long.

Bought this sleeping bag for my daughter, and she has been using it every day since it arrived. The soft and breathable fabric keeps her warm without being too hot, and the glow-in-the-dark zipper is a fun feature she absolutely adores. The bag is durable and comes with a backpack for easy carrying, making it perfect for vacations and camping trips. Additionally, the quality of the stitching, zipper, and storage sack all seem strong and well-made, making it an excellent investment for kids before they move on to adult sleeping bags.

Morrison Little Mo Sleeping Bag

Best Kids’ Sleeping Bag For Babies

This bag has a fleece zipper flap to keep the zipper away from delicate skin, a down-filled draft tube to keep out cold air, and a secure footbox. Those are just some of the features that set the Morrison Little Mo apart from other baby sleeping bags.

Some items labeled as baby sleeping bags are sleep sacks designed to be used regularly for your baby to sleep in. But this is a sleeping bag designed for camping and is not supposed to be used in the home where a baby might overheat.

Pros

  • It meets all American Academy of Pediatrics safe sleep guidelines. There are no drawstrings, and the collar prevents your baby from sliding down into the bag.
  • It unzips from the bottom which allows for easier diaper changes.
  • Suitable for babies from 6 months to 24 months. The exception to this is if your baby was born prematurely. In that case, you should ask your pediatrician if this baby sleeping bag would be right for your baby at their current stage of development.

Cons

  • It cannot be used in the home like a baby sleep sack. You may get limited use from the sleeping bag before your child grows too big for it.

Personal Perspective

My family loves camping, and this sleep sack has been a useful addition to our trips. It's lightweight and packs well, making it easy to bring along. However, I found that it may not be suitable for temperatures below 40 degrees, as my child felt cold during colder nights. Additionally, the lack of hand access made it difficult for my child to self-soothe with a pacifier. Despite these drawbacks, this sleep sack does keep my little one warm during milder nights and has been a helpful addition to our camping gear. Just be prepared to add extra layers and possibly make modifications for hand access if needed.

How to Choose the Best Kids Sleeping Bag

The first thing you need to ask is what your child will be using their sleeping bag for.

This may seem like a no-brainer — they’re going to sleep in it — but various sleeping bags are best for different situations. The kids’ sleeping bag you might choose for a sleepover will be different from the sleeping bag they will need for camping.

A sleepover bag does not have to be especially warm if your kids will be sleeping inside a house. If they are taking the sleeping bag to summer camp and will be sleeping in unheated cabins, you’ll have to choose a sleeping bag that will keep them warmer.

If your child is camping outside, you’ll want to choose a sleeping bag rated for colder temperatures.

Once you have narrowed down the list based on where your child will be sleeping, and how warm they will need to be, you can consider these other factors.

Sleeping Bag Fit

The length of the sleeping bag will affect how long your child will be comfortable in the sleeping bag. You don’t want to choose a sleeping bag that is too big. But if you choose one that is just right, they could quickly grow out of it.

You’ll also want to consider shape. Sleeping bags that narrow toward the feet are warmer, but if you have a child that sleeps like a starfish, you’ll be better off with a traditional rectangular design.

Head Room

If you’re looking for higher-end products, the best sleeping bags for kids usually have a hood area. This can be useful for holding a pillow in place or for scrunching around the head to keep warm. That’s especially useful if your child will be sleeping outside.

Outer Shell Material

The majority of kids’ sleeping bags have a polyester outer shell and a polyester/taffeta blend inner shell.

Not all shells are waterproof, so if that’s a feature you’ll need, be sure to double-check.

Insulation

Synthetic insulation doesn’t get cold and damp easily. Down insulation gets warmer faster, but it does get heavy and cold when wet.

This can be a problem if your child spills something on their sleeping bag or throws up at 2 a.m.covering themselves, their dad, and everything else in your tent in stinky chocolate milk and s’mores vomit. I speak from experience on this point.

Zippers

Does the sleeping bag have zipper liners that prevent the lining from snagging in the zipper? This can be important if your child will have to open and close their sleeping bag without supervision. It is also crucial for a quick exit from a sleeping bag when nature calls.

Carrying Straps Or Stuff Sacks

Is there an easy way to roll up and carry the sleeping bag? That’s a big deal if your child will have to carry it themselves.

Sleeping Bag FAQs

Here are the answers to some commonly asked questions — many parents wonder these same things.

When Can I Put My Baby In a Sleeping Bag?

It’s dangerous to put your baby down to sleep in a regular sleeping bag because of the risk that they will either roll over or wriggle down into the sleeping bag and suffocate. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends babies sleep on a firm surface. Also, it states the sleeping area should be free of toys, loose coverings, and other potential obstructions, including the loose fabric of a sleeping bag (1).

However, baby sleeping sacks and sleeping bags are specially designed to keep the area around the baby’s head free from potential obstructions and to prevent them from wriggling down into the bag.

For children under 2, you should only ever use a sleeping bag specially designed for babies. For children older than 2, only use a sleeping bag that is for the appropriate age range.

How Can I Make My Kids’ Sleeping Bag Warmer?

The best ways to keep your kids warmer in a sleeping bag are:

  • Have them put on additional layers of clothes.
  • Add a cotton, fleece, or silk liner.
  • Get your kids to wear a hat, gloves, and thick socks.

How Do I Clean a Sleeping Bag?

Since your kid will be using this bag, there’s no way around it — you’ll have to clean it sometimes. Kids are messy!

But, whenever possible, you should avoid putting your sleeping bag in the washing machine as this will increase the wear and tear on your bag. Before a full wash, consider whether you can spot wash the bag.

Here are the two cleaning methods you can use:

  • Spot wash: Use a toothbrush, soap, and water to scrub dirty areas such as around the opening of the sleeping bag or any marks. Hold the liner away from the insulation and rinse.
  • Full clean: Wash your sleeping bag according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not use fabric softener, and do not wash it in a top-loading machine with an agitator. Put it on the delicate cycle.

Where to Put a Sleeping Bag on a Kids’ Pack?

It is best to place your child’s sleeping bag inside their pack. This will prevent the sleeping bag from becoming damp.

If you are attaching it to the outside, whether it goes at the top or the bottom is a matter of preference.
