The Best Strollers for Big Kids & Toddlers of 2024

Here are the 10 best strollers for big kids.

Evenflo Pivot Xplore All-Terrain Stroller Wagon

Best All-Terrain Stroller for Older Kids

With its rugged all-terrain tires, this stroller is a fantastic option for families who adventure on the weekends.

Whether you’re strolling through the woods, around the park, or through fields, these wheels can handle it.

The wagon-style stroller can support two kids up to five years old. So if you have siblings who want to see the world, this stroller is for you.

The UPF 50-plus canopies provide sun protection for your little ones, preventing sunburns and keeping them cool while they rest.

What We Like

Push or Pull

This stroller wagon offers some incredible versatility. You can push it like a regular stroller or wheel it behind you like a wagon. The option to pull it behind you makes it excellent for navigating more tricky terrains.

Three Color Options

Get your child involved in the shopping experience! There are three colors to choose from: cargo green, charcoal gray, and black.

Spacious Storage for Trips

If your kids like bringing tons of toys and snacks on day trips, this has adequate storage space. An easy-access basket is included to hold all the essentials. If your child is in the wagon alone, they can swivel the basket to be in the wagon with them.

We also love that it comes with a unique table for two with deep cupholders, making snack time so much easier!

What We Don't Like

Not Practical When Folded

While this wagon is easy to fold, it doesn’t lock when you’ve folded it up. That means it opens, closes, and moves around quite a bit. This isn’t practical when you’re carrying it to and from the car.

Not for Tall Parents

A common customer complaint is that this isn’t a great option for tall people. Even people around the average height of 5’6” struggled with the handlebars. They found they needed to hunch over.

Product Specs

Product Weight 34.7 pounds

User Experience

I recently purchased this wagon and it has exceeded my expectations. The assembly was quick and easy, and once set up, it's simple to fold and store, taking up minimal space. The sun shades, seat belts, and snack tray are all great features that my kids love. The detachable storage basket is a convenient addition for shopping trips or extra storage when needed. The highlight of this wagon is its smooth ride on any surface – it glides effortlessly, making it easy to push or pull. Additionally, the stroller brakes are well-designed, providing secure locking without any hassle.

Baby Jogger City Select 2 Stroller

Best Daily Tandem Stroller

This single stroller becomes a double stroller with the purchase of adaptors and a second seat. It’s is a solid choice for parents of children who are close in age. Instead of the single wheel found in jogging strollers, two large front wheels offer better stability. The design is wider in the back than in the front for increased maneuverability.

This stroller is feature packed and designed to perform well in any scenario or on any terrain. Padding throughout the seat and even the leg rest area keeps your little ones comfortable. The height-adjustable, roomy sunshades are great for tall kiddos.

The oversized undercarriage storage basket makes everyday use possible in a wide variety of locations. We’ve used this stroller many times for shopping and can attest to the fact that it will hold multiple bags stuffed full of groceries or other bulky items.

There are over 24 seat configuration options, and you can attach a kickboard to make this stroller suitable for three children. You can also purchase various other accessories, such as bassinet seats, child or parent snack trays, and weather shields.

The one-step compact fold makes this stroller easy to store. Baby Jogger claims it folds up 20% smaller than other leading strollers.

What We Like

Large Front Wheels and Excellent Suspension

We love the oversized front wheels. They’re set well, providing additional width for needed stability while still allowing for smooth steering. Extra stability means you don’t need to worry about your stroller coming unbalanced and tipping, even when using it with only one child.

The all-terrain front wheels also have a suspension system that absorbs impact and creates a smoother ride. This is more comfortable for your little one and makes for easier use by the pusher.

Spacious Sunshades

The sunshades on each stroller seat offer 50+ UV protection. This allows you to custom adjust for each child’s needs.

The height-adjustable sunshades provide a more pleasant riding experience for children of dramatically different heights.

Available Accessories

There are plenty of accessories on the market designed specifically for this stroller model. If you need additional items, you won’t have to settle for trying to make universal fit options work for your stroller. Car seat adapters, snack trays, weather shields, and parent consoles are all available.

Suitable for Use With Approved Infant Car Seats

This unit can be used for newborns with an approved car seat using the corresponding adapter. Double-check that your current car seat is compatible. Knowing which adapter is needed will depend on the individual car seat.

What We Don't Like

It’s Heavy

As with most double strollers with solid frames, this model is heavy when used with two seats. Each seat weighs nearly 10 pounds, and the sturdy frame adds much more. Although the all-terrain wheels carry that weight well, the stroller can be heavy to load in and out of a vehicle or up stairs to your home.

Product Specs

Product Weight 26.7 pounds or 27.7 pounds with second seat installed
Minimum Age 0+ months
Maximum Weight 90 pounds combined weight

Personal Perspective

My experience with this double stroller has been mostly positive, as it is not only easy to assemble and fold, but also feels smooth to maneuver on flat surfaces. The soft tencel fabric and leatherette details give it a luxurious appearance, and the large storage basket is very convenient. However, I did find that it struggles on bumpy terrain, such as grass or gravel, and the shoulder strap threading can be quite frustrating.

BOB Revolution Flex 3.0 Jogging Stroller

Best Travel System for Big Kids

Need a stroller to take you from infancy well into childhood? This model can be used with newborns as long as you’re using a compatible car seat and adapter (sold separately). It’s capable of supporting up to 75 pounds and children who are up to 44 inches tall.

Pneumatic tires make this jogging stroller an excellent option for outdoor walks and off-roading. It’s also a great choice for exercising, while everyday features like storage and recline options increase usability.

What We Like

Adjustable Handlebar

The handlebar offers nine positions to create optimal comfort for the caregiver. It doesn’t extend but offers joints and pre-set positions that alter the angle of the handlebar and give you different heights. Changing the angle is easy and can be done on the go when swapping pushing duties with another person.

Locking Front Wheel

The front wheel swivels, which gives great maneuverability and makes the unit easy to navigate. However, you can also lock it straight, which is helpful when you’re running. Locking it in place will give you more stability and puts less strain on your stroller during use at a faster pace.

Comfort Features

With reclining seats, padding, and a suspension system, this stroller is made to keep your little one comfortable. In the process, you can get more done without complaints from your child.

The sunshade is adjustable to help protect your child from harmful rays. It also offers ventilation to ensure they don’t overheat. A peekaboo window allows you to check in as needed.

Infant Car Seat Compatible

The BOB Revolution Flex is compatible with multiple car seat brands. However, you’ll need to purchase an adapter that’s specific to the brand you use. If you’re interested in this feature, plan on committing to a single manufacturer to limit the number of adapters you need to purchase.

For more information on which car seats will work with this model, see the manufacturer’s website (1).

What We Don't Like

Rust Is Common

Plan on keeping this stroller protected from rain and snow. Oxidizing of the joints and fasteners is not protected under the warranty, and the metal parts are prone to rust. Avoid using this stroller during bad weather, and always wipe away moisture with a clean, dry cloth before storing it to prevent rust.

It Has a Large Fold

The heavy-duty frame and cozy comfort features increase the size and weight of this stroller. Even folded, it takes up a significant amount of space. If you drive a smaller vehicle or have limited trunk space, this won’t work well.

Community Feedback

I'm thrilled with this double jogging stroller, as it is far more practical for two children than my previous stroller. The side-by-side weight distribution makes navigating sidewalks and hills much easier, and the independent reclining seats are perfect for my baby and toddler. This stroller's maneuverability and smooth suspension are fantastic, even better than my single running stroller. Folding the stroller is simple, and the storage at the bottom is sufficient for a few extra items. It is quite large, as expected for a double running stroller, but that doesn't detract from its overall quality. There are a few drawbacks, such as the foam handrail, a mysterious squeaky sound, and the lack of a hand break, but overall, this stroller has truly impressed me.

Uppababy G-Luxe Stroller

Best Lightweight Big Kid Stroller

Weighing in at just over 16 pounds, this unit is convenient and lightweight. When folded, it can stand on its own and be carried over your shoulder for easy transportation. Its compact fold makes it an excellent choice for a spare stroller that stays in the trunk of your car.

An adjustable footrest, sunshade, and reclining seat give your child the most comfortable ride possible. A padded seat and undercarriage storage also improve usability and make this model suitable for everyday use.

This unit is for use with children who weigh more than 4 pounds and less than 55 pounds.

What We Like

Suitable for Daily Use

The adjustable stretch-knit sunshade protects your little one from the sun. A front reflective visor allows for additional customizing. It’s also treated with a UPF 50+ coating to prevent harmful UV rays from penetrating the canopy.

Padding through the cushion and seat recline gives your little one a comfortable ride. A rear wheel brake is easy to access and lets you park your stroller safely.

Substantial Undercarriage Storage

The undercarriage basket is easily accessible and can support up to 10 pounds. Despite the small footprint of the stroller, this storage space is generous and deep, making it suitable for jackets, bags, and other items.

Easy to Care for

You can remove the fabric from this stroller and machine wash it when needed. It’s easy to remove and put back on and washes well. Let it hang to dry, replace it on your unit, and your stroller is ready to go.

Small Footprint

This stroller doesn’t take up much space, even when it’s opened. It’s a wonderful option for crowded areas. It’s Lightweight, making it a good choice for traveling needs, though it doesn’t offer an extremely compact fold.

What We Don't Like

Can Be Challenging to Fold

The folding mechanism can be difficult to work with. To collapse the unit, you need to depress a button. It can be tricky to use with a single hand, and you’ll likely need two to create the fold.

You’ll also need to ensure all the material is aligned before folding. If the fabric catches in the fold, it may prevent proper closing. It can also rip the material.

It’s Not a Flat Fold

Being able to stand the stroller while it’s folded helps prevent it from becoming dirty or damaged. To achieve the standing fold, though, this unit can’t give you a flat fold. If you need a compact fold for your stroller, this likely won’t work for you.

First-Hand Impression

Bought this umbrella travel stroller to make trips with my little one more convenient, and it has served its purpose well. While it's not as lightweight as I initially expected, the shoulder strap makes it easy to carry, and it doesn't consume much trunk space. The sunshade is impressively extensive, providing excellent protection, and the ability to recline the stroller is a useful feature. However, I did find the folding and unfolding process a bit challenging, but my spouse has no issues with it.

Chicco TRE Jogging Stroller

Best Suspension System

This model is an excellent option if you’re looking for a stroller that can keep up with your exercise schedule. It offers an adjustable suspension system that gives you the perfect ride, regardless of the terrain.

By removing the seat, you can snap the Chicco KeyFit car seat into the frame during the first six months of your child’s life. As a travel system, this stroller adds convenience and makes day-to-day chores more manageable.

Collapsing this stroller is easy with its one-hand fold. You can also fold it into different configurations depending on your needs. This model offers a flat, self-standing, and compact fold intended for long-term storage.

What We Like

The Folding Options

We love the different types of folds this stroller has. The self-standing option is perfect for storing in garages, while the flat fold works well for car trunks. These folds are easy to accomplish.

The fold for long-term storage is more involved. However, it does give you a more compact unit that will make efficient use of your space.

Durable Materials

The seat is made of athletic material that is easy to keep clean. It can be wiped with soap and water, and the fabric is durable, resisting tears and sun-fading. It dries quickly and can be used in all kinds of weather.

Adjustable Suspension System

This stroller offers adjustable suspension, which is excellent for creating a comfortable ride. You can control how much suspension you need without letting go of the stroller or bending down. A foot pedal activates and adjusts the system, allowing you to make minor changes as you go to accommodate changing terrain.

Multi-Position Handle

The handlebar can be adjusted to suit users of different heights and create a more comfortable user experience. The handle is padded, and there are three pre-set options you can choose from. You can alter the position while you’re on the go by using the side handlebar buttons.

What We Don't Like

Available Storage Is Tight

Though the storage area is easily accessible, it is on the smaller side, and large diaper bags may be difficult to fit. If you’re using this stroller for vigorous activity, like running, attaching a diaper bag in another way may be impractical.

The Parent Tray Is Small

The parent tray is big enough for your keys, phone, and a small beverage. While these everyday features are nice to have, it doesn’t have the same robust quality other strollers do. If you need more out of a parent tray, you may want to consider using an additional stroller organizer with this model.

User Experience

I'm extremely satisfied with this stroller's performance and build quality. It handles smoothly on sidewalks and rugged terrain, ensuring a comfortable ride for my baby. This stroller is easy to assemble, and I particularly appreciate the adjustable suspension, which effectively absorbs bumps and prevents my baby from being disturbed. However, it's important to note that this stroller is quite bulky when folded, taking up a significant amount of trunk space. Additionally, navigating tight spaces and small doorways may be challenging. Despite these minor drawbacks, the stroller remains a reliable and sturdy choice for parents seeking a high-quality jogging stroller.

Joovy Caboose Too Ultralight Stand-On Stroller

Great for Two Kids

If you’re tired of struggling with wide double strollers, this model may interest you. It’s the lightest, smallest full double stroller on the market. Your children can sit one in front of the other, and the stroller is a standard width.

Great maneuverability and plenty of add-ons make daily use convenient. A parent tray, undercarriage storage, sun canopies, and seat recline will keep you and your children happy.

A universal car seat adapter is included with this stroller, and it’s suitable for use with most car seat brands. A complete list is available through the manufacturer (2).

What We Like

Multiple Modes of Use

We love how many different ways this stroller can be used. It’s suitable for newborns with a car seat adapter and a compatible infant seat. A full rear seat that’s safe for children aged 6 months and up can be removed if it’s not needed.

When the rear seat isn’t installed, you can use this space as a bench seat for children ages 2.5 and older. An extension on the back of the main canopy affords the child closest to the parent protection from the sun.

If preferred, you can also use this rear area as a standing platform. It’s suitable for older children who need a break from walking but may feel too old for a stroller. It also saves you heavy lifting and ensures that even long legs can be comfortable.

Sealed Bearing Wheels

Made from high-quality materials using the same technology you find in inline skates and skateboards, these wheels provide a smooth ride. They swivel easily and give the stroller excellent maneuverability. Dual wheels in the front and singles in the back provide stability and make navigating the stroller a breeze.

Spacious Seats

Though this is a space-saving stroller, the seats are roomy, allowing for plenty of leg space for your little ones. Both seats also have a recline function to keep your children comfortable and allow for naps while on the go.

Folds Flat

Despite the roomy seats and extra space in the stroller, it folds quickly and easily. It also gives a nice flat fold that won’t take up more room than most single strollers.

What We Don't Like

Undercarriage Storage Is Shared Space

This stroller features undercarriage storage that stretches beneath both seats. While the front seat has a footrest, your back rider shares foot space with the storage basket. You may not be able to effectively use this space for storage without making your child uncomfortable or damaging your items.

The Canopy Extension Might Not Provide Enough Protection

Though the canopy extension works to protect your little one in the rear from the sun, it doesn’t give full coverage. Do you have a child with sensitive skin, or do you plan to spend a significant amount of time out in the sun? You’ll need additional sun protection.

Personal Perspective

I recently purchased this double stroller for my newborn and 2.5-year-old, and it's been a fantastic addition to our family outings. It fits my baby's car seat and my toddler comfortably without squishing him, and the maneuverability is pretty impressive. The stroller has some great features like two cup holders, a shade attachment, and a back bench seat for when my son gets tired, but I do wish the handlebars were made of thicker/stronger metal and the storage basket was larger.

Baby Trend Xcel Jogger Stroller

Best for Off-Roading

If you need a stroller that can keep up with a high level of activity, consider this one. Durable tires on a traditional jogging stroller model perform superbly on a variety of terrains. With pneumatic, air-filled wheels, you can expect a smooth ride on grass, dirt paths, and paved areas.

This stroller can be used as a travel system with an appropriate Baby Trend infant carrier. It also offers plenty of features that make it appropriate for everyday use. The reclining seat, an adjustable harness, and the large-capacity undercarriage storage keep things easy and convenient.

You Might Also Like
baby trend strollerTop Rated Baby Trend Strollers: Which One is Best for You?

What We Like

Great for Everyday Needs

Though it’s marketed as a jogging unit, this stroller has many features you look for in an everyday stroller. There is plenty of storage in the easy-to-access and roomy bin below.

The seat also reclines to keep your little one comfortable, and ventilating mesh through the top provides excellent air exchange. The snack tray, footrest, and included adult cup holder improve usability and make your errands run more smoothly.

Durable

The sturdy aluminum frame and durable material keep this unit looking great even when it’s regularly used. The material is easy to care for and can be spot cleaned or wiped with water when dirty. It’s also fast-drying, which is perfect for when you’re caught in a little rain.

Exceptional Maneuverability

Designed with athletic activities in mind, this unit is easy to steer and navigates well, even in crowded places. Though jogging strollers are often larger than standard strollers, this one is compact enough to work inside malls and shops.

The front wheel swivels, which makes moving through groups of people and tight spaces easier. When needed, you can lock it to provide extra stability.

Convenient Fold

A trigger fold makes this stroller quick and easy to collapse. It also serves as a safety precaution, ensuring there’s no way for the unit to close when you don’t want it to. It has a latch that can be secured in place to make carrying and moving the folded stroller easier.

Though it’s not a true compact fold, it’s easy to manage. It’s also capable of standing while folded, making storage easier.

What We Don't Like

Securing Latch Is Manual

The latch that secures the fold is not automatic, and you’ll need to manually place it to activate the locking mechanism. To release the lock, you bring the stroller closer together and undo the latch. You’ll need to be careful while moving the folded stroller so you don’t accidentally unlatch the fold.

This Is a Casual Jogger

If you’re looking for a stroller you can exercise lightly with and use daily, this is an excellent option. But if you’re looking for a unit you can train heavily with, you may want to consider another model.

The front wheel is prone to wobbling when not locked. While the undercarriage storage and snack tray are great for regular use, they may slow you down during strenuous runs.

Community Feedback

I've been using this stroller for quite a while now and it has become one of my favorite baby purchases. Despite its lower price compared to other jogger strollers, the quality is impressive. The ride is smooth and silent, making it enjoyable for both me and my 9-month-old. Although the canopy doesn't provide full coverage and the brakes can be a bit challenging to use, these are minor cons compared to the many pros.

Baby Trend Sit N Stand Ultra Stroller

Best Convertible Stroller for Toddlers

A versatile option, this stroller can be configured in a variety of ways to suit your growing family. You can even use it with two infant car seats at once with the help of an adapter (available separately).

This model is designed for extended, regular use. It comes with many convenient features that make day-to-day activities easier. Substantial undercarriage storage, multiple cup holders, and swiveling front wheels improve usability and improve the experience.

What We Like

Multiple Configuration Options

If you’re looking for a stroller that gives you options, this is the ideal candidate. You can use this stroller with two infant carriers, with one child sitting and one standing, or with an infant carrier and a sitting or standing child. Where your infant carrier can be safely secured will depend on which car seat model you are using.

Comfortable and Convenient Features

Plenty of storage in the undercarriage and multiple cup holders increase the usability of this model. An adjustable canopy keeps your little one out of the sun, and foot pedal brakes are easily accessible to provide a secure stop.

Works With Many Infant Car Seats

This stroller is for use with multiple brands and models of car seats. If you plan on using two, make sure your car seats latch correctly in both the front and the back of the stroller. Not every car seat will work in both locations.

What We Don't Like

Accessing Storage Is Difficult

Storage is ample, but the bin must be accessed from between the front and back seats. This can make it difficult to retrieve items you’ve stored, especially when your children are in the stroller. If you need regular access to your things, you may need to consider carrying them separately.

Not Suitable for Small Trunks

This stroller doesn’t offer a compact fold. If you have limited storage space or a smaller, unusually shaped car trunk, you’ll want to choose a different stroller.

First-Hand Impression

I recently purchased this double stroller and have been using it for my 1-year-old and 4-year-old children. I found the front space to be perfect for my younger child, while the back is great for my older child to either ride or stand. The stroller has ample storage space underneath and six cup holders for added convenience. Although it can be a bit more difficult to navigate than a single stroller, it is still easy to fold and take with you on various terrains. My only concern is the limited recline of the front seat, which may not be ideal for napping during long outings, but overall, this stroller has been a practical addition to our family outings.

Joovy Zoom Lightweight Jogging Stroller

Best Jogger for Older Kids

The Joovy Zoom is a fantastic choice if you’ve been struggling to find a jogging stroller that works for an older, taller child. The seat on this stroller sits up higher than other models, giving your little one a great view. Capable of supporting up to 75 pounds, it will also support your little one well into childhood.

This model can be used as a travel system with the appropriate car seat adapter. It also has a swiveling front wheel for easy maneuvering. This wheel can be locked during runs for additional stability and a smoother ride.

What We Like

It’s Lightweight and Compact

Jogging strollers are known for being heavy, especially those designed for older children. At just about 28 pounds, this unit is lightweight and easy to get in and out of cars. It maneuvers well when in use and has a compact fold suitable for smaller trunks.

High Weight Limit

This stroller can support up to 75 pounds of weight. It’s made for children who are 3 months old and older, which means you’ll get years of use. Designed with the high weight limit in mind, this model is also easy to maneuver, even with a heavier child on board.

Higher Seat

The extra height is helpful when pulling up to a table at a park or restaurant. You can skip the booster seat and have your little one stay in the stroller during quick meals on the go.

Plenty of Legroom for Tall Children

The extra space between the stroller’s seat and the ground allows more room for your child’s legs. A footrest gives your child a place to keep their feet and helps them have a comfortable ride.

What We Don't Like

Challenging to Fold

Though the fold is compact and convenient, it’s not easy to achieve. You’ll need to plan on using two hands to trigger the fold, and it may be more time-consuming than you anticipate.

It’s a Large Stroller

This stroller is excellent for outdoor activities, but you may find it’s too wide to use easily indoors. Like other joggers on the market, the rear wheels are larger and set further apart. Though it maneuvers easily, it won’t work well in crowded areas or narrow walkways.

User Experience

This jogging stroller is lightweight and easy to maneuver, providing a smooth and comfortable ride for my child. The upgraded features, such as the higher seat, improved suspension system, and one-handed folding, make it a top competitor among high-end jogging strollers. However, I did experience an issue with the foot brakes breaking after just a few days of use, which was disappointing considering the overall quality of the stroller.

GB Pockit+ All-Terrain Stroller

Best for Airports

An exceptional option for traveling, this is one of the most compact strollers. It folds down impressively small and is tiny enough to fit in overhead bins on an airplane. Weighing less than 13 pounds, it’s lightweight enough to easily bring wherever you go.

When open, this unit has a reduced footprint. It’s a good size for navigating tight or crowded areas. Even with its small size, this model manages to hold on to helpful add-ons, like seat recline, a sunshade, and undercarriage storage.

What We Like

Incredibly Compact

We can’t get over how small and lightweight this stroller is. It’s easy to carry with only one hand and even gets small enough to fit in a bag. Once folded, it’s little enough to slide under seats or fit in overhead compartments, making it an excellent choice for public transportation.

Suitable for Young Children

While this isn’t suitable for a newborn, it can be used with children who are at least 6 months old. With a weight limit of 55 pounds, this sturdy unit’ll get you through the first several years of your child’s life.

Fantastic Maneuverability

Intentionally designed to be easy to push and steer with a single hand, this model maneuvers well. The front wheels swivel but also have a lock feature.

When you’re working in tight areas and need a great turning radius, keep the lock off. For longer walks or straightaways, locking the wheels can give you a smoother ride.

Perfect Backup Stroller

This stroller is user-friendly with a small footprint, making it ideal to keep as a backup in a car. With its lower weight, it’s also an excellent stroller to keep with the grandparents for visits. It’s simple to operate and move in and out of cars, and virtually anyone can close and lift it.

What We Don't Like

It’s Intended for Travel

This unit does have great features you’d want in an everyday stroller. With the focus on being lightweight and compact, though, they are on the sparse side.

The sunshade doesn’t offer a tremendous amount of coverage or adjustability. And while there is undercarriage storage, it’s not large.

You may love this stroller if you’re searching for a travel companion or a unit you’ll use on occasion. Unfortunately, it’s just not one that’ll function well for you for daily use.

Two-Step Folding Process

This stroller’s fold is truly an asset, but it’s not a quick fold you can activate on the go. You’ll need to dedicate a few moments to collapsing the unit and arranging it. With two steps to the process, anticipate needing both hands to achieve the fold and safely store your stroller.

Personal Perspective

I'm impressed with this stroller's portability and ease of use during my recent trips with my 2-year-old. It folds easily after a few tries, is relatively light, and fits in overhead compartments on airplanes. However, it does feel flimsy compared to a full-size stroller and the sunshade and storage options are limited. Despite these drawbacks, the stroller served its purpose well, allowing us to maneuver through busy airports and city streets with ease.

How to Choose a Stroller for a Big Kid

The following tips will help you rule out strollers that won’t work for you while identifying ones that have everything you need:

How Often You Plan on Using Your Stroller

If you have a child who’s still regularly using a stroller, you’ll want to opt for one with features you’d use daily. Storage, comfort, and ease of use will be at the top of your list of considerations.

Where You Plan on Using Your Stroller

There are a variety of wheels on the market, and they don’t all work well for every activity. Oversized wheels can be fantastic for outdoor use but take up too much space when indoors.

Your Child’s Age

You should always default to the manufacturer’s recommendations when it comes to keeping your child safe in a stroller. Age and weight limits are typical. Consider your child’s age, height, and weight before you shop to ensure you’re looking at an appropriate model.

Storage Space

It will need to go somewhere when you aren’t using your stroller. Oversized options are fantastic for comfort but can be challenging to use in tighter spaces and difficult to store. Consider any storage limitations before purchasing.

Factor in Weight

Most strollers for older children can support more weight. This usually means the frame is heavy-duty, durable, and weighs quite a bit. Be sure you’re comfortable lifting a heavy stroller in and out of your car before you move forward with a purchase.

Consider Features Carefully

Determine the things you aren’t willing to compromise on having with your new stroller. It may be storage space, a snack tray, or an adjustable handlebar. Prioritizing your wants will leave you with a stroller that closely aligns with your needs.

Budget

You’ll find strollers at all price points. Plan a budget for your purchase before you begin shopping.

Types of Strollers for Big Kids

Like strollers intended for younger children, units geared toward older kids are available in a variety of types. Some of the most popular are umbrella, jogging, double, and travel strollers.

Umbrella Strollers

Umbrella strollers are lightweight options that collapse and store well. They’re a fantastic choice for short spurts of use.

You can often find small models you can keep tucked away in a trunk until needed, and they generally include convenience factors such as carrying handles. This allows you to have them on hand when needed.

Many umbrella strollers are short on storage space and feature hard plastic wheels. You’ll find them with dual or single wheels, and they’re available at various price points.

Cheaper-quality models or those with single wheels can be more difficult to maneuver. Keep this in mind while shopping to ensure you get a stroller you love to use. You’ll find these models usually perform best on interior floors, but you can also use them on paved outdoor walks.

Pros

  • Compact and lightweight.
  • Perfect for occasional use.

Cons

  • Usually only suitable for children up to 55 pounds.
  • Not for use with children who are younger than six months of age.
  • Uncomfortable on rough terrain.

Jogging Strollers

Jogging strollers usually sport a three-wheel design, with one large tire in the front and two bigger ones in the back. Instead of hard plastic or foam, these use bicycle-style pneumatic tires that are filled with air.

The wheel style makes these strollers easy to steer and comfortable to push. You’ll find they frequently have shock-absorbing systems in place. This makes for a more pleasant ride for your little one while reducing strain on your wrist, shoulders, and back.

Some jogger models offer great everyday add-ons for convenience and comfort. It’s not unusual to find them with undercarriage storage, parent trays, footrests, and snack trays for your child. Most also come with a functional sunshade and a seat recline feature.

They can be an exceptional option when you’re looking for a stroller for longer rides.

Pros

  • Many have high weight limits.
  • They tend to be taller, with more room for your child.
  • Great daily-use features.
  • Suspension systems for comfortable rides.

Cons

  • Can be expensive.
  • Don’t always fold compactly.
  • Usually heavy.

Double Strollers

A double stroller allows one person to push two children at a time. You can find this type of stroller in two configurations. Your children will either sit side by side or one behind the other (tandem).

Your preference will depend on where you plan on using your stroller and what’s most comfortable for you. A double stroller set-up can be polarizing, and people usually have only one style they’ll consider using. If you can, test these out in person to see if your selected model will work for you.

Intended for two children, these models often have a higher weight limit. It is possible to find units that are compatible with newborn infant carriers. Many double strollers offer additional storage space as well.

Pros

  • Plenty of storage.
  • Higher weight limits.
  • Carries two children.
  • Available in multiple configurations.

Cons

  • Larger than standard strollers.
  • Can be difficult to maneuver in crowded spaces.

Travel Strollers

Travel strollers are designed to fold down quickly and take up little space. These are the lightest strollers you’ll find, and many can collapse small enough to store in overhead bins on an airplane. They may fit in a diaper bag or be worn over the shoulder with an included strap.

Travel strollers are designed for a particular purpose and aren’t made for daily use. They can lack those features you’d want in something you use regularly, like recline, storage, or even great sun protection. While they’ll help you make it through a crowded airport, you likely won’t want to use it in many other places.

Pros

  • Lightweight and exceptionally compact.
  • Perfect for traveling or as a spare in a trunk.

Cons

  • Not always comfortable.
