Definitely one of the best backpacks I've had, this backpack is not only sturdy and spacious but also made of high-quality material. I've been using it for over a year now, and it still looks brand new. The numerous pockets make it easy to organize and access items quickly, while the included changing pad and insulated pocket add convenience for parents on-the-go. However, there is a minor design flaw with the side pockets which can make them too tight to use when filled. Despite this, the backpack has proven to be a reliable and stylish choice for handling the needs of my growing family.

From personal experience, I found that even when empty, it stands up straight on its own, and the multiple pockets make organizing a breeze. The color options are abundant, which allowed me to choose one that truly resonated with my personal style, and the material is both durable and lightweight. One minor downside is that the zippers can sometimes feel a little crunchy and not as smooth, but overall, this bag offers great value and functionality for its price.

First-Hand Impression

Best diaper bag backpack I've tried! At first, I thought the bag looked small and the material felt thin, but I was amazed at how much it could hold without being bulky. The water-resistant feature kept everything dry during heavy rain, and the many pockets made organization a breeze. The insulated bottle pockets and changing pad could be better, but they're not dealbreakers for me.

If you're looking for a stylish, functional, and spacious diaper bag, this is the one for you. The bag itself is made of durable, easy-to-clean materials and has numerous compartments and pockets to keep everything organized. I particularly love the built-in stroller straps and the comfortable, padded backpack straps that make it easy to carry even when fully loaded. The included changing pad is larger and more well-made than those found in other diaper bags. While I wish there were more color options and a silver lining instead of gold, these minor details don't detract from the overall quality and usefulness of this fantastic diaper bag.

JuJuBe Be Right Back Backpack

Best Diaper Backpack for Messes

Moms know life with a little one can be very messy. Stay organized and clean with this backpack diaper bag from Ju-Ju-Be. It looks pretty and has a lot of space, but it’s also easy to wipe down.

This bag is made of nylon, a durable material that is machine washable. Whether it’s spilled milk or splashed mud, you can throw it in the wash without worrying it will fall apart.

We also like that the fabric has been treated with Agion and Teflon. The Agion treatment is used on the interior and helps prevent bacteria, mold, and mildew. On the outside, the Teflon treatment resists stains.

Also included are padded shoulder straps, a memory foam changing pad, and a lifetime warranty.

If you're looking for a stylish and spacious diaper bag, this one might be your new best friend. I've been using it for a few weeks now and it's been a lifesaver, especially with the comfortable straps, easily accessible pockets, and durable zippers. The only downsides are the lack of organization pockets in the main compartment, but getting small pouches to keep things organized solved that issue for me.

I'm impressed with the functionality and organization of this backpack diaper bag. It has many compartments and pockets that make it easy to access wipes, diapers, and bottles. The material is durable, and the bag is easy to clean. However, the straps could be more comfortable, and the bottle compartment could be slightly larger to accommodate taller bottles.

If you're looking for a diaper bag that is both functional and stylish, this diaper bag might be the one for you. I found it to be durable, easy to clean, and lightweight, which made it great for daily use. However, after about a year, I noticed the faux leather handle starting to crack and some thread unraveling. The bag's organization is fantastic, with many compartments for all of your baby's essentials, and it stands upright when set down - a feature I didn't realize I needed until I had it. The black color keeps it looking clean and new, but I do wish the interior had a more chic design.

Obersee Bern Diaper Backpack & Cooler

Best Backpack Diaper Bag with a Cooler

The detachable cooler that comes with this bag makes it possible for you to tote it along when you need it or leave it behind when you don’t.

It also includes a loop to hold your sunglasses, a headphone port, and a pocket for a music device.

It’s so functional, you may choose to continue using it as your regular backpack well after your child has left the diapering years.

And with high-quality, durable construction and polyester exterior, this backpack will be around for as long as you need it.

Pros

  • Includes a detachable cooler.
  • Casual, sporty design.
  • Includes space for a laptop.
  • Comes with a changing pad.

Cons

  • Weighs in at 2.2 lbs.
  • Only comes in black.
  • You must purchase stroller straps separately.

In my experience, this backpack has a great size, but attaching the cooler complicates accessing items inside. I found myself wishing for a better attachment location to avoid disturbing the rest of the backpack's contents. Additionally, it would have been nice to have an easily accessible pocket specifically designed for wipes on the outside of the bag.

My experience with this diaper bag has been quite positive, with its stylish design and spacious compartments making it convenient for carrying essentials for my baby, toddler, and preschooler. However, I faced some challenges with the white areas getting dirty easily and the durability of certain features, such as magnetic buttons and side pocket linings. The backpack design allows for hands-free carrying, and the stain-resistant fabric makes cleaning up spills relatively easy. One downside is the size of the bag, which can be cumbersome in tight spaces, but it is necessary to accommodate all our essentials.

Diaper Bag Backpack for Dad

Best Backpack Diaper Bag for Dads

With so much modern baby gear designed with pink frills and polka dots, it’s sometimes hard for dads to find a diaper bag they love. This DadGear backpack is a great alternative and will please parents who want something practical above all else.

It definitely ticks those boxes. It comes in several color options, from minimalist ranger green to retro to camo print.

A large changing pad is included, and there are roomy, insulated bottle compartments on the side and a top pouch for diapers. Moreover, this multipurpose diaper bag is waterproof and made of hard-wearing polyester.

Pros

  • The main zipper compartment unzips to lay flat like a suitcase for easy access.
  • Very large main compartment.
  • Stroller strap included.
  • Doesn’t look like a diaper bag.

Cons

  • May look bulky when bag is almost full.

The main compartment opens all the way up like a suitcase, making it easy to see and access everything inside. The exterior pockets are super useful, and the two insulated bottle pockets are perfect for keeping drinks at the right temperature. The only downside is that the wipe compartment can be a little tricky to load, but once it's in there, it works fine.

HotStyle Cute Mini Backpack Diaper Bag

My experience with the HotStyle Mini has been quite pleasant, as it's super lightweight and comes in a variety of colors. The bag has two bottle holders and enough space for diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes, making it convenient for outings. Why Choose a Diaper Bag Backpack?

There are many types of diaper bags available, with most designed to look like a large purse or tote bag with extra pockets. However, carrying a bag over one shoulder or with your hands can be awkward and uncomfortable. Using a backpack diaper bag frees up your hands, which is often necessary when you have a baby or busy toddler.

Take Note

Traditional purse-style or tote-style diaper bags can cause neck and shoulder problems. When you carry a heavy bag on one side of your body, you unknowingly adjust your posture to make up for the extra weight. This can lead to tension in muscles, joints, and tendons.

Using a diaper bag backpack allows you to spread out the load in an ergonomic way, which can relieve your neck and shoulders from the burden of carrying a one-shoulder diaper bag. (1)

As you’re already carrying a car seat, pushing a stroller, or toting a child, you need your hands free, and your back needs all the relief it can get.

Can’t I Use a Regular Backpack?

While it might be tempting to use a regular backpack you already own, chances are, it doesn’t contain waterproof pockets or insulated compartments.

These are handy when you’re carrying soiled clothes home from a playdate at the park or when you need to bring milk or baby food for your on-the-go travels. And having individual pockets to keep your baby’s feeding and diapering items organized makes your life a whole lot easier.

Remember

Not only is it practical to organize your backpack contents, but it’s also healthy. A poorly-packed backpack with haphazard contents can cause injury due to poor ergonomics.

Using a bag designed to carry specific items helps spread the weight and load appropriately, making it more functional and comfortable.

How to Choose a Backpack Diaper Bag

These are the things you’ll want to consider when selecting a backpack diaper bag.

Capacity

If you have multiple children or are gone for hours at a time, a larger-sized backpack diaper bag will serve you best. Conversely, a smaller-sized bag may be adequate if you only have one child or don’t leave the house frequently.

Weight

Depending on your strength and stature, the weight of your diaper bag may be important. Some bags weigh in at over 2.5 pounds — and that’s before you even load up your gear. If you already struggle with neck, shoulder, or back pain, it’s best to skip over the backpacks with extra padding, built-in cooler bags, and other accessories and choose a lightweight diaper bag instead.

Design

Diaper bag backpacks come in a multitude of designs. Some are sleek and modern, some fun and flirty, and some are designed to look like a regular backpack. Choose a bag that fits your personality and will last for the duration of your diapering years. And if your partner will also be using it, choose a style that suits both of you.

Easy to Clean

Between bottle mishaps, sticky post-snack fingers, muddy vehicle floors, and diaper blowouts, your bag is bound to get dirty. We especially appreciate diaper bags with a water-resistant exterior and interior you can easily wipe down.

Storage Pockets

Babies seem to come with a lot of extra equipment. Consider all the items you’ll be putting in your diaper bag, and identify your specific storage needs to keep everything neat and organized. You don’t want to have to dig through a giant, jumbled mess every time you need something.

Insulated Compartments

Insulated compartments can hold bottles of pumped milk or formula, baby food, or sippy cups. Having the ability to keep food and drinks cool when traveling or on outings is priceless.

Stroller Straps

You don’t want to be carrying your diaper bag all the time, and it’s nice if you can save the storage space under your stroller for other items such as a purse or extra sweaters or blankets. If you choose a backpack diaper bag with built-in stroller straps, you can keep it within easy reach.

Safety First

Although stroller straps make it easy to hang your diaper bag on the handles of a stroller, a heavy bag can cause your stroller to tip backward, injuring your child. Never hang a heavy diaper bag from the handles, always keep one hand on the stroller when your back is attached with the stroller straps, and always remove the bag before unfastening your child’s safety belt to prevent tipping.

What Should I Carry in My Diaper Backpack?

Everyone knows that babies need regular diaper changes, but you might still wonder why a diaper bag is a necessity. Can’t you just throw an extra diaper in your purse and head out for the day?

Unfortunately, no. You’ll probably find yourself needing a whole lot more space than your purse can hold — and you’ll find yourself wishing for organizers inside to keep all items firmly in place instead of jumbled in the bottom of your bag.

Many mothers carry the following items in their diaper bags:

It’s clear that if you’re going to keep your sanity, getting a bag that’s designed for carrying and organizing baby gear is a good idea. If you’re out and about and find yourself wishing you had packed something specific, make a note and add that item to your backpack the moment you get home, so you don’t forget to bring it next time. Get duplicates of small, cheap items like wipes and burp cloths so a few can permanently live in your diaper bag.

FAQs

Do Both Parents Need a Diaper Bag?

If both parents plan on parenting, then the answer is yes. All the responsibility for diaper changing shouldn’t go to one parent.

It only makes sense that both parents have a diaper bag, since both parents won’t always be together throughout the day and one of you will have the baby. Also, if for some reason one diaper bag goes missing, you’ll have a back up.

How Big Should Your Diaper Bag Be?

Buy something that’s big enough to carry all your baby’s essentials relating to eating and diaper changing, but not so big it’s difficult for you to carry.

A medium-sized diaper bag is the safest way to go, because it should be large enough without being too heavy. You’ll need enough room to fit things like baby wipes, diapers, bottles, etc.

How Much Should I Spend On a Diaper Bag?

Consider your personal budget first. High-end diaper bags exist if you want something extra fancy, but plenty of diaper bags come at an affordable price.

Some high-quality diaper bags can be bought for as low as $30-$40. $70-$90 is the higher end of the average diaper bag price. Most of us can expect to spend somewhere within the range of $25-$95.

How Many Diapers Should I Pack for a 3 Day Trip?

You should plan on buying new diapers when you get to your destination. You really only need to pack enough diapers to get your baby through the trip to wherever you’re going.

12 diapers are a good amount to pack for most trips, but if you’re going a long distance, you may need more. Don’t forget to bring 12 more diapers for the trip home!

How Do You Store Dirty Diapers When Traveling?

The answer here depends on how you’re traveling. Taking a baby on a plane ride? Luckily, all airplanes come with air sick bags in the seat pocket located in front of you.

Take the sick bag, change your baby in the airplane bathroom, and then wrap the diaper up tightly in the air sick bag. Throw the bag away in the bathroom trash can.

You’ll have to get a little more creative on road trips. We recommend bringing some doggy bags to tie up your baby’s dirty diapers at rest stops. You can throw these bags away in the bathroom trash.

When Should You Start Packing a Diaper Bag?

It’s a good idea to start packing your diaper bag by the time you get to your third trimester. Around this time, you want to finish up buying the supplies you’ll need to parent a newborn.

The last thing you want during the final stages of your pregnancy is stress over putting baby supplies together. It’s best to have all the materials you’ll need ready to go weeks before the baby gets there. You never know if you’ll conceive earlier than you planned, too.
